Scenic World has been owned and operated by the Hammon family since the original company opened in 1945. The railway that was to become the basis of the operation dates back to the late 1800s and was originally built to haul coal and shale up from a mine in the valley. When the mine closed, a local businessman named Harry Hammon and his sister Isobel Fahey saw the potential of the railway for tourism and purchased the lease. Over the years, three generations of the Hammon family have overseen the growth of the company into one of Australia’s best-known tourist attractions. The company has won a number of awards. These include a Telstra Business award and a Third Generation Family Business award from Family Business Australia. Scenic World has been certified as an Advanced Ecotourism company by Eco Tourism Australia. More details about the origins of the railway can be found here.
