Blue Mountains Student Recognised by NSW Tourism Minister
Western Sydney University student, Cassandra Farquharson, has been recognised by Destination NSW with a Minister’s Student Achiever Award for Tourism and Hospitality Studies.
The award was presented to the Mount Riverview local on Thursday 26 September, at Sydney Parliament House by NSW Minister for Tourism, Stuart Ayres. It is awarded annually to outstanding young students for their consistent academic achievement, and for demonstrating the capabilities and personal qualities that would make a significant contribution to the tourism and hospitality industry in NSW.
Award recipient Cassandra Farquharson is currently completing her second year in a Bachelor of Tourism Management with a Western Sydney University scholarship. The scholarship is solely funded by Scenic World’s philanthropic program, Scenic World Shared and Cassandra is the first student to receive the scholarship.
On being presented the award, Cassandra said that it had given her a “massive confidence boost” and caused her to reflect on her progression since starting the degree. “It was a big achievement for me considering that I wasn't sure if I would do well in my studies due to my 2 year break after high school,” she said.
The Minister’s Student Achiever Award acknowledges the importance of professional training to the tourism industry and encourages talented students to progress with a career in tourism. Each award includes a cash prize for the student.
On sharing her experience of attending the award ceremony she said, “It was also great to network with the Destination NSW employees to figure out how they got in their current position and the steps I could take to end up in a similar role.”
With the nous and academic ability Cassandra has demonstrated so far, it seems likely it’s only a matter of time before she’ll end up in that similar role.
