It takes 1.75 litres of oil to produce 1kg of high density polyethylene plastic used to manufacture milk bottles. Although this plastic is recyclable, much of it ends up in landfill due to lack of awareness or indifference to participating in recycling schemes. The average café uses tweleve 2 litre plastic milk bottles daily. Given that there are over fifteen thousand coffee shops in Australia, that equates to a conservative estimate of one hundred and eighty thousand empty milk bottles per day, not including domestic milk consumption. Our reliance on plastic packaging, both essential and non-essential is not sustainable. The definition of a parasite is an organism that lives off another organism and benefits by deriving nutrients at the other’s expense. We humans need to avoid killing our host.
