Three Phases of the Dark Moon, 2014
Three Phases of the Dark Moon is a sound installation. The work brings together composed material and infrasonic sound. The composed material captures the fluidity of the environment - natural meanderings and glimpses of 'structural pillars' reflected in the composition. Combining acoustic instruments and electronically rendered sound sources, this composed material uses a wide array of sound manipulation as well as transformed composed materials. Three gestures are used throughout the work - heterophonic sound mass, a simple angular melodic component, and singular percussion statements punctuating the ambience.
Infrasonic sound is felt rather than heard, sits below the audible spectrum, and has been shown to elicit involuntary physiological and psychological responses - ranging from meditative calm to disquiet. The infrasonic component in Three Phases of the Dark Moon is geared towards the former, creating a meditative oasis within the larger space of Scenic World.
