Sustainability
Situated adjacent a UNESCO World Heritage-listed site, Scenic World’s location, experiences and interactions with the environment make us unique. We are a responsible tourism business focused on minimising our carbon footprint and serving as environmental stewards for future generations. As a family business, this obligation to value and protect the natural environment of Scenic World is stipulated in the Hammon Family Constitution.
Scenic World is certified Carbon Neutral for our services as a tourist attraction by Climate Active, certified an Advanced Ecotourism attraction by Ecotourism Australia and is regularly monitored by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council. Closer to home, we have achieved a Gold rating as a member of the Blue Mountains World Heritage Institute’s Low Carbon Living Program.
Heritage
Established in 1945, Scenic World began with Harry Hammon’s entrepreneurial vision to transform a former coal mine into an iconic tourist attraction. With the closure of Katoomba Colliery in 1945, Harry recognised an opportunity to innovate, converting old coal skips and existing rail track into a passenger train, creating what is still today the world’s steepest passenger train.
Today, Scenic World continues to be owned and operated by the Hammon Family, offering award-winning experiences to over a million visitors annually.
Corporate
Scenic World is owned and operated by Hammons Holdings Pty Ltd (ABN 38 000 600 475), a third-generation, family held and operated Australian business.
Scenic World is Australia’s most visited privately owned tourism attraction. Scenic World is led by Manager Director Anthea Hammon and is one of the largest employers in the Blue Mountains, employing more than 160 local residents.
Scenic World is an active member of Family Business Australia and acknowledged within the industry for delivering an innovative, sustainable tourism experience.
For more than 70 years, Hammons Holdings has undertaken consistent investment to establish Scenic World as a world class tourism attraction, maintaining best practice standards in safety, quality and customer experience excellence. This includes over $90M in major projects over the past two decades.
In 2018, the NSW Government appointed Hammons Holdings as the operator of Sydney Harbour Bridge Tourism Activities, including BridgeClimb Sydney. For all enquiries relating to BridgeClimb, click here.
