Who we are

Surrounded by endless views and lush rainforest in the World Heritage-listed Blue Mountains, we are passionate about creating lifelong memories for guests from all over the world. We are home to the world’s steepest railway, the steepest cable car in the Southern Hemisphere, the first cable car in Australia, and one of the longest elevated boardwalks in Australia.

Our heritage

Established in 1945, Scenic World began when Harry Hammon, a local entrepreneur, had the vision to transform a former coal mine into an iconic tourist attraction.

When the Katoomba Colliery closed in 1945, Harry recognised an opportunity to innovate - he converted the old coal skips and existing rail track into a passenger train, creating what is still the world’s steepest passenger train.

Today, Scenic World continues to be owned and operated by the Hammon Family, offering award-winning experiences to over a million visitors a year, and it is one of the largest employers in the Blue Mountains.

Our family

For three generations, Scenic World has remained owned and operated by the Hammon family.

Anthea Hammon, one of five siblings, is the current Managing Director and her brother, David Hammon is CEO of the Hammons Holdings Group, which also operates BridgeClimb.

Scenic World is an active member of Family Business Australia.
