Our commitment
Surrounded by a World Heritage-listed area, our experiences and interactions with the natural environment make us unique. We are passionate about minimising our carbon footprint, protecting our incredibly fragile environment, and serving as environmental stewards for future generations.
Iconic experiences, minimal impact.
We are accredited by Ecotourism Australia as an Advanced Ecotourism attraction and Green Travel Leader. In 2024 we were inducted into Ecotourism's Hall of Fame for being accredited for 20 years an Advance Ecotourism attraction.
We are also certified Carbon Neutral for our services as a tourist attraction by Climate Active. This means you can have mountains of fun without generating mountains of CO2…ride the world's steepest railway, the iconic Skyway, and the steepest cable car in the Southern Hemisphere, and walk beneath the rainforest canopy, knowing that we are ensuring all this is carbon neutral.
Leave only footprints.
- Catch public transport instead of driving a car. Check out train times to Katoomba here.
- Already in Katoomba? Walk, cycle or catch the bus to Scenic World.
- Choose an Explore More Day Pass - jump on the carbon-neutral Explorer Bus to travel to dozens of stops across the upper mountains. The bus stops at Scenic World every hour.
- Are you renting a car? Consider an electric car and charge up with our green powered EV charge stations in our carpark.
- Use a travel offset calculator and buy an offset for your trip.
- Buy local! It's not only a fun way to get to experience the region's food, drinks, industry, arts and culture, it's a way to support our local community and that has a lower carbon footprint than buying goods that are transported to our region.
EXAMPLE INITIATIVES
- We offset the carbon emissions from all our visitors' travel to and from us.
- In the 2023 calendar year, we also offset 9.2kg of CO2 per person who visited us - that is 8,797 tons! (We do this each year).
- We are certified Carbon Neutral by Climate Active for our services as a tourist attraction.
- We have installed 350 solar panels - this will offset 120 tonnes of CO2 per year, which is like taking 25 cars off the road.
- We have water efficient fixtures and timers in the bathrooms, and wastewater management procedures in our commercial kitchen.
- We have installed LED lighting (80% installed) and are phasing out non-LED lighting.
- We have EV charging stations in our free guest carpark.
- We sustainably manage all our organic waste so it is turned into fertiliser for farms. Around 50 tons of organic waste will be diverted from landfill each year and turned into compost.
- We keep our Food and Beverage department’s food waste output below the industry standard of 5%.
- Our rides are designed to be energy efficient. For example, electricity generated by the Railway and Cableway is fed back into the grid. The latest Skyway cabin was designed to hold more passengers without needing more energy to operate.
- We constructed an elevated boardwalk (the Scenic Walkway) over the rainforest floor to replace walking tracks that caused erosion. No trees were damaged or removed during construction and we continue this approach where we can.
- We partner with the Blue Mountains World Heritage Institute to support environmental projects and awareness of the work of the Institute (learn more).
- We work closely with the Blue Mountains Explorer Bus and BridgeClimb who have Climate Active certification.
